Biodiversity

IHBT is constantly striving to generate new knowledge to fulfill its mission of sustainable management of Bioresources in the himalayan region by adopting a multidisciplinary approach in R & D activities. The Institute has five Divisions engaged in research of high scientific impact

Multidisciplinary group engaged in crucial task of surveying and mapping bioresources of western Himalaya, documenting ethnic knowledge base, & identification of medicinal herbs using molecular tools. (BDU)

Facilities

TThe division has experimental farms with herbal garden, arboretum, and facilities for developing agrotechniques of target medicinal plants. It has a herbarium listed in the Index Herbariorum with the acronym "PLP". It is well equipped with the infrastructure, gadgets and software for application of RS and GIS techniques in survey and inventorization of the eco-systems and flora of Himalayan region. The division is a nodal centre for Traditional Knowledge Digital Library in western Himalaya. It also has infrastructure for creation of databases based on ground truthing and literature search on plant wealth of western Himalaya.
