CSIR Technofest bags Gold Medal Award at Trade Fair

 

The pavilion of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s adjudged First (Gold Medal) for excellence in display in the category, ‘Ministries & Departments’ at the 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF)

 

The Gold medal was presented by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) Chairman, Mr. L.C. Mittal.1. Also, CSIR-800: Societal Interventions received CSIR Platinum Award and Generics & Healthcare bagged CSIR Gold Award. CSIR-IHBT actively participated in both the sections.

 

Dr.Girish Sahni, Director General, CSIR said: “Getting recognized for what CSIR is doing is indeed exciting. Everything happened because of the hard work put in by the entire CSIR family. The outcome of the last 75 year journey of the organization was on display and people liked it. We tried to portray our technologies in an aesthetically appealing way and we succeeded, as we stood first. This will boost us to continue the good work in the future.”

 

Talking about the mission and vision of CSIR, he added: “A number of projects are in the pipeline to take our mission projects further. More than 10 projects are being undertaken, including menthol mint production, enabling leather industry and new improved high-yield crop varieties for farmers which will increase their incomes.”

 

After receiving the award,  Dr. Daljit Singh Bedi, Head USD and Coordinator of CSIR Platinum Jubilee Technofest expressed  satisfaction, saying it was the most appropriate recognition of the teamwork of CSIR, depicting its contribution to the nation in its journey of more than seven decades in the most effective manner.”

 

The Technofest kicked-off on November 14 and each day was dedicated to different themes on various technologies, innovation and products developed by the CSIR laboratories. A total of 14 theme-based pavilions were set up in the Technofest. Beginning with the theme of ‘Aerospace & Strategic sector’, the event witnessed other theme-based activities focusing on ‘Generics & Healthcare’, ‘Engineering & Infrastructure’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Leather’, Mining, Minerals & Materials, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, ‘Ecology & Environment’, ‘Water’, ‘Agriculture & Floriculture’, ‘Food & Nutrition’, ‘CSIR for Societal Interventions’, CSIR 800 and IP and Entrepreneurship. 

 

CSIR, with its motto of ‘Touching Lives’, is leaving a remarkable imprint upon its technology partners and technology users

श्री जय राम ठाकुर, माननीय मुख्यमंत्री हिमाचल प्रदेश का सीएसआईआर-आईएचबीटी दौरा

माननीय मुख्यमंत्री हिमाचल प्रदेश श्री जय राम ठाकुर दिनांक 06 मई 2018 को सीएसआईआर-आईएचबीटी के दौरे पर आए। उनके साथ कांगड़ा-चम्बा के लोकसभा सांसद श्री शांता कुमार तथा राज्य सरकार के खाद्य एवं आपूर्ति मंत्री श्री किशन कपूर, शहरी विकास मंत्री श्रीमती सरवीण चौधरी, स्वास्थ्य एवं परिवार कल्याण, चिकित्सा शिक्षा, आयुर्वेद तथा विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्री श्री विपिन परमार भी उपस्थित थे। मुख्यमंत्री तथा अन्य गणमान्य लोगों ने सबसे पहले संस्थान द्वारा विकसित, संस्थान की सहायता से इन्क्यूबेटी और उद्यमियों द्वारा विकसित उत्पादों की प्रदर्शनी तथा शोधकार्यों का अवलोकन किया। अपने संबोधन में माननीय मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि संस्थान अपने शोध द्वारा किसानों की आय को बढ़ाने तथा रोजगार के अवसर प्रदान करने की दिशा में सराहनीय प्रयास कर रहा है। उन्होंने आशा प्रकट की कि संस्थान द्वारा विकसित तकनीकों से अवश्य ही प्रधानमंत्री के 2022 तक किसानों की आय को दो गुणा करने के लक्ष्य को प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। इस दिशा में आईएचबीटी विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी के अनुसंधान प्रयासों से किसानों एवं बागवानों के जीवन स्तर को उन्नत करने में परिवर्तन ला सकता है। उन्होंने आगे कहा कि आधुनिकीकरण की दौड़ में हम अपने पारम्परिक मूल्यों को न भूलते हुए उन्नत कृषि तकनीकों एवं रसायनिक खादों का समझदारी के साथ उपयोग करें ताकि भूमि की उर्वरकता और उत्पादकता बनी रहे। हमें आधुनिकता और परम्परा के साथ मिलकर चलना चाहिए। उन्होंने आगे कहा कि संस्थान द्वारा किए जा रहे प्रयासों को गति देने के लिए जो भी आवश्यकता होगी राज्य सरकार उसमें पूरा सहयोग करेगी। लोकसभा सांसद श्री शांता कुमार ने अपने संबोधन में कहा कि किसानों की दशा सुधारने की दिशा में और अधिक प्रयास करने की आवश्यकता है। देशी गायों का संवर्धन तथा किसानों की आय पर विशेष ध्यान देने की आवश्कता है। चाय जो इस क्षेत्र की पहचान है धीरे धीरे विलुप्त होती जा रही है लेकिन संस्थान ने चाय के विविध उत्पाद बनाकर चाय को बचाने के लिए सराहनीय कार्य कर रहा है। पुष्प, औषधीय खेती के क्षेत्र में संस्थान के प्रयासों को किसानों तक पंहुचाने की आवश्यकता है।       

                  

श्री विपिन सिंह परमार, माननीय स्वास्थ्यमंत्री ने अपने संक्षिप्त संबोधन में बताया कि हिमाचल प्रदेश सरकार बेहतर स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं देने के लिए कृतसंकल्प है। संस्थान की उपलब्धियों को देखते हुए माननीय मंत्री ने निवेदन किया कि हिमाचल की उन्नति में संस्थान अपना पूरा योगदान करे।

 

इससे पूर्व संस्थान के निदेशक डा. संजय कुमार ने माननीय मुख्यमंत्री, मंत्री एवं सांसद एवं अन्य गणमान्य अतिथियों का संस्थान में पधारने के लिए आभार व्यक्त किया तथा संस्थान की शोध एवं विकास गतिविधियों की जानकारी प्रदान की।

 

इस अवसर पर माननीय मुख्यमंत्री ने ‘संस्थान गान’ को लोकार्पित किया। संस्थान की ‘हिमालय से  सगंध तेल’ नाम की वेबसाइट को विमोचित किया। अरोमा मिशन के अन्तर्गत अनुसंधान और विकास की तकनीकों को किसानों के खेतों में पहुंचाया जाएगा। सगंध पौधों की खेती और उसके मूल्यवर्धन द्वारा किसानों की आमदमी बढ़ाने के लिए रुपये 15.5 करोड़ का प्रावधान किया है जिसके द्वारा प्रदेश भर में 500 हेक्टेयर बंजर और खाली पड़ी भूमि को सगंध पौधों की खेती के अन्तर्गत लाएगा और इन फसलों के तेल निष्कर्षण हेतु प्रदेश भर में किसान समूहों के लिए 50 आसवन इकाईयां लगाई जाएंगी। इस अवसर पर संस्थान द्वारा तैयार जंगली गेंदे की उन्नत किस्म के बीजों को वितरित किया ताकि वे इसे उगाकर अच्छी आमदनी प्राप्त कर सकें। माननीय मुख्यमंत्री जी की उपस्थिति में संस्थान और किसान समूहों के मध्य समझौता ज्ञापन भी किए गए। इसी दौरान उन्होंने संस्थान परिसर में औषधीय पौधे जिंको बाइलोबा का रोपण किया। यह पौधा एलजाइमर की समस्या से पीड़ित लोगों के उपचार के लिए उपयोगी है। माननीय मुख्यमंत्री श्री जयराम ठाकुर ने संस्थान के ‘सबेटिकल निलय’ का उदघाटन भी किया। इस निलय में देश-विदेश के वैज्ञानिकों के अनुसंधान के दौरान ठहरने के लिए उचित व्यवस्था की गई है।

माननीय राज्य मंत्री (स्वतंत्र प्रभार) सूक्ष्म, लघु और मध्यम उद्दम मंत्रालय, श्री गिरिराज सिंह जी ने 30 अप्रैल 2018 को सीएसआईआर-आईएचबीटी में दौरा किया। सांसद आदर्श ग्राम योजना के तहत, इन्होंने, नवादा ग्रामीण क्षेत्र में सौर्य चरखा से बूनकर समाज को लाभान्वित किया है तथा विज्ञान की मदद से रासायनिक उर्वरक की जगह अपशिष्ट पदाथों से बने जैविक खाद के उपयोग को बढ़ावा देने पर बल दिया। श्री सिंह ने आईसीएआर के कृषि-वैज्ञानिकों के साथ मिलकर मोरिंगा बायोमास पर आधारित पशुओं के चारे को बनाने के लिए प्रयासरत हैं।

 

सीएसआईआर-आईएचबीटी में स्टीविया उत्पादन और प्रसंस्करण की वैज्ञानिक तकनीकों को गन्ना आधारित उद्योगों के समकक्ष अपार संभावनाएँ जताईं। He informed that CSIR-IHBT will get Technology Business Incubator (TBI)

 

माननीय मंत्री जी ने ईच्छा प्रकट करते हुये राज्य एंव केंद्र के सूक्ष्म, लघु और मध्यम उद्दम विभागों को स्फूर्ति योजना के अन्तर्गत संस्थान के साथ कदम से कदम मिलाकर  किसानों के भले के लिए कार्य करने सलाह दी ताकि माननीय प्रधान मंत्री के किसानों की आय को दुगना करने के सपने को साकार किया जा सके। इससे पूर्व माननीय मंत्री महोदय ने संस्थान की गतिविधियों का अवलोकन किया और वैज्ञानिकों, शोध-छात्रों और संस्थान द्वारा मार्गदर्शित इंक्यूबेटर्स से परिचर्चा की।

 

इस अवसर पर स्थानीय लोकसभा सांसद माननीय श्री शान्ता कुमार जी ने संस्थान में पधार कर शोभान्वित किया।  श्री शान्ता कुमार जी ने संस्थान दवारा किए गए महत्वपूर्ण शोधकार्यों की सराहना की तथा स्थानीय चाय बगानों के उत्थान के लिए किए गए वैज्ञानिक शोधकार्यों को बागवानों तक पहुँचाने के लिए कार्य करें। इन्होंने ओर्गानिक चाय को बढ़ावा देने के लिए संस्थान की सराहना की ताकि स्थानीय क्षेत्र को इसके लिए विशेष पहचान मिल सके। Shri Shanta Kumar Ji: Vigyan should be used with Vivek, otherwise it could be disastrous to the mankind

Second day of visit of  Hon’ble Minister of State for Micro Small Medium Entrepreneurs (MSME) to CSIR-IHBT, Palampur (30thApril, 2018)

Shri Giriraj Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Micro Small Medium Entrepreneurs (MSME) in second day of his visit to CSIR-IHBT, Palampur visited various facilities, labs and fields. During interactions he said that “It is a matter of happiness to know that CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technologyhas a sharp focus to develop and commercialize technologies, processes and products from Himalayan and other bioresources using cutting edge science and technology. It is also heartening to see that the institute strives to improve the livelihood of the farmers to strengthen their socio-economic status through various activities viz., Aroma and Phytopharmaceutical Missions, floriculture and stevia, tea and many others”.

  • He applauded the Institute’s active support to farming community by providing quality planting material, standardized agro- and process technologies on medicinal, aromatic and industrial crops like stevia, which is not only generating higher revenue to the farmers but has given relief to the farmers from the menace of wild animal, monkeys and weather aberrations. CSIR-IHBT’s new initiatives such as developing region specific cluster of farmers, specialized training programmes forcultivation of aromatic crops in waste/ unproductive/ unutilized land, installation of central distillation unit in the farmers’ premises, connectivity through networking chain for constant advisory shall further strengthen the scope of improving livelihood. 
  • was satisfied to observe that CSIR-IHBT has been giving open support for small and medium entrepreneurs to use its facilities, and has been recognized as one of the incubation centres by MSME. Institute has contributed significantly through technology development and transfer to entrepreneurs and industrial partnersin various fields viz., industrial enzymes, low calories sweeteners (stevia), crispy fruits, nutraceuticals, health promoting molecules like antioxidants.
  • Stevia, wild marigold, air purifying indoor plants, ginkgo, Kutki among field crops and ready to serve teas, tea wines, algae culture technologies attracted the minister the most.
  • Tea industry is faced today with issues of labour shortage and rising cost of tea production, and institute’s efforts in promotion of tea farm mechanization and development of value added tea products like ready to serve tea, tea wine and tea catechins  is respite to this industry. It is also noteworthy that institute has promoted the ready-to-serve local cuisine ‘KangriDham’ and ‘Ayurvedic Khichri’ which are preservative free with longer shelf-life for wider marketability. Aligning with Bamboo Mission of Government and the vast bamboo resource available in the region, institute’s objective to develop various industrial products such as wooden board, textile yarn, charcoal, etc. is highly appreciable.
  • Societal empowerment in country like India is the need of the hour where adequate skilled manpoweris required to be developedfor sustainable utilization of bioresources, especially rare, endangered and threatened plant species. It is a pleasure to note thatthe Institute has positioned to promote Skill Development through special courses and programmes in various areas, like Animal Breeding & Housing Practices, Hands-on Laboratory Experiment and Analysis, training courses in Gardening, Plant Tissue Culture, Floriculture, Protected Cultivation etc. This would help entrepreneurs to develop industries around local bioresources of high commercial values.
  • Development of relevant technologies however needs sharp focus on fundamental science. I observed that this institute has carried out commendable work in the area of basic science, ranging from utilization of bioresource potential, environmental protection to conservation of natural resources. There remains still greaterscope to develop and promote technology-based entrepreneurship so that the youth become job creator and not the job seekers. Therefore, expectations are high from young scientists who have to think out of the box to take forward the national missions, and emphasized on addressing the need of mountain communities to evolve into Swasth, Samarth and Sashakt Bharat. 
  • It is worth mentioning here that the minister has already announced setting up of TBI (Technology Business Incubator and Livelihood Business Incubator) in the Institute for fostering incubation culture and entrepreneurship in the region. He motivated the scholars and students of institute to become entrepreneurs based on the technologies they are associated with.
  • Dr Sanjay Director of the Institute expressed his gratitude for the visit, motivation to the staff and scholars and guidance for future course of work.

M/s Himalaya Natural & Herbal Products in association with CSIR-IHBT launches Him Pure Green Coffee

M/s Himalaya Natural & Herbal Products, Palampur launched “Green Coffee” on Monday the 9th April, 2018 with technology support of CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur. Green coffee is processed from fresh Arabica coffee-beans without undergoing the process of roasting. The coffee beans are processed under specific conditions to obtain homogenous particles which are rich in anti-oxidants and known to boost the metabolic system. The Him Pure Green Coffee is totally pure, free from any chemical or preservative, and has its natural flavor and colour.
Under the signed agreement with CSIR-IHBT, the company will initially market the product in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and New Delhi. Dr Sanjay Kumar, the Director of CSIR-IHBT stated “Our aim is to support the young entrepreneurs through our technologies but on the other hand we remain committed to develop processes and products which are healthy, economical and of benefit to public at large.”
The company announced that on sale of each box, one rupee will be donated for helping mentally retarded children through Rotary Inner Wheel’s Home (Jammu & Kashmir) for Mentally Retarded Children.

CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur (H.P) signed Memorandum of Understanding with M/s Maa Danteshwari Herbal Product Ltd. Dist Bastar, Chhattisgarh for Stevia Cultivation and establishment of a processing unit

CSIR-IHBT, Palampur (H.P) signed Memorandum of Understanding with M/s Maa Danteshwari Herbal Product Ltd. Dist Bastar, Chhattisgarh for Stevia Cultivation in 10 acres in Village  Konda Gaon, Dist Bastar, Chhattisgarh as per technical know-how of CSIR-IHBT. The activity will promote socio-economic development in this tribal area. Stevia plantation will be extended further by the M/s Maa Danteshwari Herbal Product Ltd. in new area after one year. Steviol glycosides, which is extracted from stevia leaves, is 300 times sweeter than the sugar made from sugarcane. This is a natural sweetener and being used in medicines and has antibacterial activities. This natural sweetener is useful in preventing heart problems, diabetes, obesity and is being used by the food industries. 

In another MoU, CSIR-IHBT, Palampur (H.P) will provide guidance and technical know-how to M/s Maa Danteshwari Herbal Product Ltd for establishment of processing unit at site selected in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra for extraction of steviol glycosides.

CSIR-IHBT celebrated National Science Day

CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur celebrated National Science Day with great enthusiasm on 28 Feb, 2018 to commemorate the discovery of the famous “Raman Effect” by Sir CV Raman, for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in physics in 1930.

In order to generate curiosity and scientific instincts among children several activities and demonstrations on isolation of natural compounds, distillation of essential oil, plant tissue culture, microbial techniques, nanotechnology, plant identification, mapping, toxicity testing and insect rearing were organized.  They were also educated on recent technologies like DNA barcoding, toxicity analysis, application of nanoscience, mass multiplication of plants, chemical profiling. The students got opportunities to visit and witness the functioning state-of-the-art equipments in the areas of chemical and biological sciences. The agrotechnologies for increasing income of the farmers, tea planters, floriculturists were also exhibited.

On this open day about 600 students and faculty from different schools and colleges namely Govt. Senior Secondary Schools Khalet and Dehan, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Paprola, Jai Public School Banuri, Crescent Public School Banuri, Rainbow International School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Holta, Viveka Foundation Bhawarna, Anuradha Public School Maranda,  Govt. College Dharamshala, Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi and children from Udaan Learning Center, Kandbari (NGO) visited the institute.

CSIR Foundation Day Celebrations

Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur celebrated the 76th Foundation Day of its parent organization CSIR. While welcoming the guests Dr Sanjay Kumar, Director informed the august gathering that the institute channelized its efforts towards transfer of technology to the industry and for the upliftment of the society. Achievements of the year led the institute towards fulfillment of its mission of boosting bio-based economy and national competitiveness. The institute aligned itself with the Mission Mode projects of CSIR on “Mission Aroma” and “Skill Development Programme” to empower the youth of the nation. The institute also participated in the 'Fast track translation project' of CSIR with an aim to deliver products to the industry within a span of two years by “walking the last mile from lab to land”. Release of improved cultivars of gerbera and calla lilies, setting up of hydroponic and aeroponic facilities for cultivation of quality plant material, introducing apple in Mizoram - a state where this crop was never grown, introduction of quinoa and chia for the first time in the mid hills of western Himalayas, promoting the cultivation of floriculture and wild marigold, mechanization of tea farm operations were key achievements.

Dr Sanjay informed that the institute also made major headway in the area of process and product development. A new process technology was developed for the preparation of natural and refreshing instant teas. An MoU was also signed with SDZ Cha Sarl, Mozambique for the transfer of tea wines production technology. Similarly, the process developed for scale-up of dry leaves of stevia was employed to process dry leaves for M/s Agri Natural India, Ludhiana. MTAs were also signed with M/s Himalaya Natural and Herbal Products, Palampur and M/s Svyam Agro, Indore for various technologies on stevia.
He highlighted the canning technology for the production of 'ready-to-eat but preservatives/chemicals-free-foods’ and development of ‘Crispy Fruits’ by withdrawing water from fresh fruits but with original colour, texture, taste, aroma with added advantage of prolonged shelf-life and minimal nutritional loss would have huge impact in society and prevention of post harvest losses.

Dr. S.S. Handa Ex-Director, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) was the chief guest of the function who delivered a lecture on MAPs-rich repository of health care products: challenges & opportunities, where he described the potential of bioresources for drug formulation, mechanism of action of various herbal drugs, development of affordable herbal drugs, development of fragrance in the plants and their application.

Technical brochures on Agrotechnology of Stevia, a natural sweetener and Ginkgo bioloba, an important medicinal plant and a book on Track and Learn: Plants at IHBT Campus were released on the occasion. The IHBT employees who retired during the period of last two years were felicitated on the occasion. Mr Karan Bhalla from village Kural, Palampur (H.P.) was given CSIR Technology Adoption Award 2017 for promotion of commercial floriculture in the region.
The programme was attended by school children from Dagoh, Kandwari and Deol; GGSD college students, and local dignitaries.

CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology is organising JIGYASA programme from 10-14 July, 2017. JIGYASA is a student- scientist connect programme formalized through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) on 6th July 2017. Initiative of JIGYASA was taken by CSIR as a part of Platinum Jubilee Celebration. Its model includes:

 The programme was inaugurated by Director, Dr. Sanjay Kumar at CSIR-IHBT. Shri Lalit Kumar Principal KV, Holta also addressed the students. Eminent scientist, Dr. O.P. Sharma delivered the keynote lecture that was attended by school students and others. During the week long programme, students of class XI will visit the state-of the art laboratories in the area of biotechnology, bioinformatics, natural product and synthetic chemistry, internationally recognised Herbarium, remote sensing and mapping facilities, animal house facility, pilot plants for nutraceuticals, essential oil and herbals. Extensive school level experiments have been specially designed by the scientists so that children learn by doing hands on training exposure to latest scientific techniques and functioning of scientific equipment. The idea is to excite young minds, nurture scientific instinct and develop scientific temperament among the students.

CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur signed an agreement with M/s INDCOSERVE (The Tamilnadu Small Tea Growers Industrial Cooperative Tea Factories Federation Ltd., at Coonoor, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu), on 30th June 2017 for transfer of technology for extraction of Catechins from tea leaves.

Catechins are high value antioxidants responsible for numerous health benefits. For extraction of one kg catechins, 40-50 kg fresh tea leaves required and its price in international market is Rs 12,000-15,000. Catechins are 7-9 times beneficial compared to commercial tea production. As per reports, global market for tea catechins is USD 200 million with an estimated CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 7.4 % till 2020.

It is pertinent to mention here that M/s INDCOSERVE has 16 Industrial Cooperative Tea Factories under regular production, catering to an area of 36,327 acres of 25,115 small tea growers with the main object to transform their socio-economic conditions as currently commercial tea processing in the region has been adversely affected due to poor marketing. The establishment of this enterprise will boost the economy of farmers involved in tea plantation in Coonoor area of Tamil Nadu. CSIR-IHBT technology of catechins production is a green and sustainable process.

The pavilion of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s adjudged First (Gold Medal) for excellence in display in the category, ‘Ministries & Departments’ at the 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF)

 

The Gold medal was presented by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) Chairman, Mr. L.C. Mittal.1. Also, CSIR-800: Societal Interventions received CSIR Platinum Award and Generics & Healthcare bagged CSIR Gold Award. CSIR-IHBT actively participated in both the sections.

 

Dr.Girish Sahni, Director General, CSIR said: “Getting recognized for what CSIR is doing is indeed exciting. Everything happened because of the hard work put in by the entire CSIR family. The outcome of the last 75 year journey of the organization was on display and people liked it. We tried to portray our technologies in an aesthetically appealing way and we succeeded, as we stood first. This will boost us to continue the good work in the future.”

 

Talking about the mission and vision of CSIR, he added: “A number of projects are in the pipeline to take our mission projects further. More than 10 projects are being undertaken, including menthol mint production, enabling leather industry and new improved high-yield crop varieties for farmers which will increase their incomes.”

 

After receiving the award,  Dr. Daljit Singh Bedi, Head USD and Coordinator of CSIR Platinum Jubilee Technofest expressed  satisfaction, saying it was the most appropriate recognition of the teamwork of CSIR, depicting its contribution to the nation in its journey of more than seven decades in the most effective manner.”

 

The Technofest kicked-off on November 14 and each day was dedicated to different themes on various technologies, innovation and products developed by the CSIR laboratories. A total of 14 theme-based pavilions were set up in the Technofest. Beginning with the theme of ‘Aerospace & Strategic sector’, the event witnessed other theme-based activities focusing on ‘Generics & Healthcare’, ‘Engineering & Infrastructure’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Leather’, Mining, Minerals & Materials, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, ‘Ecology & Environment’, ‘Water’, ‘Agriculture & Floriculture’, ‘Food & Nutrition’, ‘CSIR for Societal Interventions’, CSIR 800 and IP and Entrepreneurship.

Visit of Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon'ble Union Minister of Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Vice President, CSIR

 

 

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Science, and Vice President of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) visited CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology located at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh on 18 October, 2016. Hon’ble Minister was shown the major research facilities and was briefed on the scientific, societal and industrial achievements of the institute.  Director apprised the Hon’ble Minister of the recent transfer of technologies/consultancies to various entrepreneurs and industrial partners. Hon’ble minister was also apprised of signing of MoU for transfer of tea wine technology to representatives of tea industry at Mozambique.

 

The Hon’ble minister inaugurated Pilot Plant facility for nutraceuticals, Academy & Technology Extension Block and Hydroponic & Aeroponic facility.  Having visited the research laboratories and field facilities of the Institute, the Hon’ble Minister’s interacted with scientists and students of the Institute. Later he also interacted with large number of entrepreneurs and farmers, who had taken technologies, advice, and consultancies from the institute in the area of floriculture, tea, medicinal and aromatic plants, food, sweeteners, and enzymes. He appreciated the efforts of entrepreneurs and farmers for adopting the lab technologies. The Hon’ble minister drew attention of the local entrepreneurs to develop industries around local bioresources of high commercial values. Since land holding size in Himachal Pradesh is small, farmers could form societies and approach the institute for technical knowhow, improved cultivars. Information technology should be used for marketing of their produce.

 

He highlighted that wide climatic diversity in Himalayan region offers unique opportunities to develop range of products and technologies such as low calorie sweeteners, enzymes and microbial based products of societal and industrial significance. He advised that adoption of green technology should be preferred as far as possible. Application of nanotechnology for enhancing efficacy of bioactive compound and metabolites for effective utilization should be rewarding. He noted that the Himalayan region has a vast bamboo resource which should be exploited for the development of various industrial products such as wooden board, textile yarn, activated charcoal and other industrial products.

 

Observing that Himalayas are highly suitable for cultivation of high value medicinal, aromatic and other crops of commerce, he suggested that the institute should develop a network of entrepreneurs for cultivation, processing and marketing of the produce in an organized manner. It will not only address the issue of increasing menace due to rising populations of monkeys, wild boar and ungulates in Himachal Pradesh, but will provide higher returns to the farmers as well. Promotion of wild marigold, damask rose, valeriana, stevia, violoa, lavender, large cardamom, Artemisia and rosemary by the Institute is a right step in the direction to strengthen farmers’ income. Similarly, he appreciated the support given to floriculture growers in terms of improved cultivars and agrotechnology that has boosted their income by about 3 times. For this the institute should ensure supply of quality planting material to the farmers and provide scientific back-up for the success of the industry. Similarly, for tackling the current issues of labour shortage and rising cost of tea production, promotion of tea farm mechanization, and development of value added product from tea viz., high value antioxidant molecules tea catechins, is a welcome step since global market of catechins is expected to grow from current value of 4400 tonnes to market 9200 tonnes by 2020. Similarly, tea based wines and ready-to-serve teas also have global demand. He was happy to note that institute has promoted the ready-to-serve local cuisine ‘Kangri Dham’ which is preservative free with longer shelf life for wider marketability.

 

He applauded the institute’s initiative to establish a research centre in the high altitude location in Lahaul valley to cater to the technological needs of the natives in cold desert area of the state, and appreciated the development made in promoting floriculture industry, particularly lilium cultivation that achieved an annual turn-over of Rs. 4-5 crores, by a group of 150 farmers. The Hon’ble Minister urged the scientists of the institute to popularize other relevant crops and use of biotechnological tools for conservation of rare, endangered and threatened plants of the Himalaya. He emphasized the need to develop skilled manpower around such technologies for sustainable utilization of bioresources. Scientists should develop novel technologies to prevent post harvest losses of commercial crops.

 

Hon’ble Minister highlighted the need to develop deep scientific understanding on fundamental research for which young scientists and research scholars need to play a greater role. Bioresources in Himalayas should be used for identification of new bio-molecules of therapeutic importance, and developing crop varieties to withstand increasing biotic and abiotic stressed in face of changing climate conditions. He said that nation has high expectations from young scientists who have to think out of the box to take forward the national missions, and emphasized on addressing the need of mountain communities to evolve into Samarth Bharat-Sashakt Bharat. He reminded the message of our Hon’ble Prime Minister to connect with common people of the country through application of science and develop people centric technology in a time bound manner.

 

The visit of Hon’ble Minister to the institute was highly motivating to the scholars, scientists and staff, farmers and entrepreneurs.

Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi released new varieties of Calla Lilly (Him Sumukh & Him Sweta) and Gerbera (Him Aabha, Him Apoorva, Him Gaurav, Him Keerti & Him Saumya)

 

 

Gerbera

  • Internationally gerbera ranks fifth among top ten cut flowers with market trade of 134 million Euros with 570 million flower sticks (2012). US and China are the major producers of Gerbera cut flowers.
  • Currently, in India gerbera is cultivated in 2250 acres. Being a three-year crop with 30,000 plant density in an acre, the annual demand of this crop is 23 million plants costing Rs. 57.5crores (price per plant is Rs. 25/-).
  • Presently, all the cultivars of gerbera in trade are imported and subsequently mass multiplied through tissue culture.
  • CSIR-IHBT is only Institute developing Gerbera varieties.

Varieties Released

  • CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur has developed five new varieties of gerbera namely, Him Saumya (light yellow colour), Him Gaurav (pink colour), Him Aabha (yellow orange colour), Him Apoorva (Red bicolour) and Him Keerti (bright yellow colour) through ongoing hybridization and selection programme. The varieties were selected for unique double / semi-double flower shapes and bright colors which find preference among consumers and are as per the requirements of market demand. A controlled hybridization programme was carried out using characterized gerbera parental lines and selecting the promising hybrid genotypes based on morphological and floral attributes. The selections were evaluated for agronomic performance under protected cultivation for two years and found superior to the parents. The varieties have good tissue culture response, nursery performance, vigorous growth and suitable for protected cultivation.

Calla Lily

  • Internationally calla lilyhas market trade of 25 million Euros with 63 million flower sticks (2012). New Zealand and US are the major producers.
  • Presently the crop is in trial mode as a future floriculture crop and the Institute will be promoting it as a new crop for commercial cut flower production as well as pot culture.
  • This floriculture crop is a new introduction and the commercial cultivation of this crop is yet to commence in India. Some of the tissue culture firms have imported the planting material of calla lilies for conducting demonstration trials in India for establishing market and consumer demand.

Varieties Released

  • The Institute has also developed two varieties of Calla lilies, Him Sumukh (yellow colour) and Him Shweta (white colour) which are very attractive because of their exotic blooms and glossy foliage. Calla lilies are new introduction as floriculture crop and have potential both as a cut flower as well as flowering pot plant.

Institute celebrated International Yoga Day (21-June-16)   

CSIR-IHBT celebrated the International Yoga Day with great enthusiasm. A yoga expert, Ms. Ruchika Chauhan from Himalayan Research Institute for Yoga and Naturopathy (KAYAKALP) Palampur was invited as the resource person. She briefly highlighted the benefits of yoga in context to the present day life style. Thereafter, she held a practical session of one and half hour and demonstrated various asanas, wherein staff and students participated. She also addressed to several queries raised by the participants. Everybody felt relaxed and energetic after the session. The programme was organised in the conference hall and telecasted live in the lobby and corridor for greater participation.
